BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA injection)
What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable agent that allows muscles to relax. In the face, this can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Common areas to have injected are frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet.
How long does it last?
On average, botox remains in effect for about three months. With continued regular injections, it can last four, five or six months and occasionally longer.
How much does it cost?
Cost varies greatly depending on where the injections are done and how much is required to get the desired effect. This depends on patient preferences as well as individual patient responses to the botox. The consultation is used to discuss these variables.
Does it hurt?
Most patients find that botox injections are very tolerable. There is a small pinch with each injection, but generally patients are pleasantly surprised that it is more comfortable than they expected.
What are the risks?
As with any injection, there is a small risk of bleeding and bruising. Most patients have none at all after botox injections, as the needle is very small and the injections superficial. As with any aesthetic procedure, there is a risk of not liking the results. While this is uncommon, the effects of the botox will gradually wear off in the months following injection and no residual effects will remain.
Dermal Fillers
What is dermal filler?
Fillers are injectable gels to “fill in” lines and wrinkles in the face. They are injected beneath the skin or into the deeper layers of the skin to provide a smoothing effect. Over time, they are metabolized and eliminated from the body. Common areas to have injected include the lips, lines around the mouth and cheeks.
How long do they last?
Fillers last approximately 9mo-2 years depending on the type of filler injected and an individual patient’s metabolism. As they are slowly metabolized and eliminated from the body, there will be less and less present until the filler is completely gone.
How much does it cost?
Dermal fillers are sold by the syringe and the cost ranges from $500-$800 per syringe. Patients may get only one syringe injected, or as many as 5-6 syringes depending on their goals. A consultation is the best way to determine how much filler may be needed.
Does it hurt?
Filler injections are slightly more uncomfortable than botox injections, but similarly, most patients find they are more tolerable than they expected. Most fillers contain some lidocaine, which allows for some anesthesia during the injections.
What are the risks?
As with botox injection, there is a risk of discomfort during the procedure, as well as bleeding, bruising and swelling. Most of the time, this is minimal, but it always better to plan a day or two of recovery time after injection.
Will I look plastic or fake?
No. Dermal fillers can be injected in a way that leaves patients looking like a slightly more youthful version of themselves. The results can be very subtle, or more dramatic, depending on a patient’s goals.
CHEMICAL PEELS
What is a chemical peel?
Chemical peel is the application of an acid that allows for a chemical exfoliation of the skin. The strength of the peel determines the depth of the exfoliation and can be very mild or more aggressive, depending on the patient’s goals and skin type. Generally, patients get the best results when they complete a series of chemical peels, each spaced about a month apart.
What can I expect afterwards?
Peeling usually begins 2-5 days after the peel. It involves small flakes of skin that gradually come off over the course of a week of two. It is important to not pick at the skin during this time and just let the process occur naturally. It is important to use a gentle cleanser during this time and moisturizers can be used to help with dryness.
What does a chemical peel treat?
Chemical peels can help improve fine lines and wrinkles. They can also be helpful in improving hyperpigmentation and acne.
MICRONEEDLING
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a treatment that involves using a device that has several small needles on one end of it. As this treatment is applied, the needles penetrate the skin at a superficial depth of 1-2.5mm. This creates micro-injuries in the skin. The skin will then begin to heal these tiny injuries and produce collagen in the process. This can create a smoothing effect on the skin.
Does microneedling hurt?
Generally, microneeding is not as painful as its name would suggest. The sensation is more similar to an electric toothbrush being run over the face. Prior to the treatment, a numbing cream is applied for 15-20 minutes. It is removed just before the treatment. There is usually a small amount of bleeding during the treatment, which resolves prior to leaving the office.
What does microneedling treat?
Microneedling can help improve fine lines and wrinkles, as well as scarring, including acne scars. Patients get the best results when the treatment is done in a series of at least 4 treatments.
LASER TREATMENT OF VASCULAR LESIONS
What is laser treatment of vascular lesions?
Our laser is able to treat vascular conditions such as spider veins, cherry angiomas and small telangiectasias. These vessels may be present on the face, torso or extremities.
Does it hurt?
This treatment takes only a few minutes to perform and the sensation is warm and prickly, but not very painful.
How long does it take to resolve?
Usually the treated area is a pink or red for 1-2 days after treatment. The vascular lesion may change in color (to purple or grey) and then typically will fade away. Occasionally, the lesions need to be treated a second time for complete resolution.
